Cynhwysodd Dylan Thomas yn Under Milk Wood gymeriad hoffus, y
Parchedig Eli Jenkins, sydd yn ôl pob sôn wedi'i seilio medden nhw ar ei ewythr a
oedd yn weinidog ac yn fardd. Cafodd y gerdd syml, hyfryd hon ei osod ar alaw mor briodol sy'n seiliedig ar salm-dôn Troyte. Mae'n cael ei chanu gan gorau meibion Cymreig. Mae Seren y Bore (The Morning Star) yn un o'r alawon a nodwyd gan Llewelyn Alaw, y telynor gwerin enwog; clywodd, casglodd, chwaraeodd a recordiodd lawer o alawon yn rhan olaf y 19eg ganrif. Daw'r set i ben gyda Waun y Cwm (The Meadow in the Valley) alaw fodern 4 curiad sy'n rhedeg yn dda ar y delyn, wedi'i chwarae fel polca. |
Dylan Thomas
in Under Milk Wood included
a lovable character, the Reverend Eli Jenkins, reputedly based on his
uncle who was a minister and a bard. The simple, pure thoughts contined in this poem are even more poigniant when carried by this lovely melody based on the psalm tune, Troyte's Chant and is often sung by Welsh male voice choirs. Seren y Bore (The Morning Star) is one of the tunes noted by Llewelyn Alaw, who heard, collected, played and recorded tunes he heard in the latter part of the 19th century. The set concludes with Waun y Cwm (The Meadow in the Valley) a modern 4-beat melody which runs well on the harp, played as a polka. |

1. Every morning when I wake, Dear Lord, a little prayer I make, O please to keep Thy lovely eye On all poor creatures born to die. 2. And every evening at sun-down I ask a blessing on the town, For whether we last the night or no I'm sure is always touch-and-go. 3. We are not wholly bad or good Who live our lives under Milk Wood, And Thou, I know, wilt be the first To see our best side, not our worst. 4. O let us see another day! Bless us this night, I pray, And to the sun we all will bow And say, goodbye - but just for now! Dylan Thomas |
